We continued making progress on the chicken coop, we built the base of the foundation as well as began sawing and adding the basic frame. After some time the other group of UGA students came to visit the center. This is a group who is studying in a town about an hour away. We showed them around the complex and introduced them to all of the kids. It was interesting to see the profound impact the kids had on that group. They were able to see how happy the kids are even with their difficult living conditions. They felt so strongly they collected money and donated a few hundred dollars.
Later in the day we went to the coca-cola bottling factory for the Kilimajaro region. We got a behind the scenes tour and presentation of the complete business they run. It was realy cool to see the process and especially to see how advanced they are in terms of environmental conciousnous when compared to the US. All of the coke bottles are cleaned and reused and all by-products are purified used as either water for the plants or fertilizer in the gardens. We also got to see how marketing in third world countries takes place and how small things like rain fall affect their profits at the end of the year.
That night we went out in town with some friends we have met and first went to a very cool local bar and restaurant, on a river with an outside movie area. It's where all of the other volunteers in the area hang out. After that we went to a new lounge and met some of the wealthier locals and got an interesting point of view of some of Tanzania's issues. I am also planning to help the owner out with some marketing ideas in exchange for free beer. Hopefully that works out. We were out late and needless to say it was difficult waking up in the morning.
